The Super Crate Box update that developer Vlambeer submitted to Apple last Friday is now live on the App Store and available to download.

This free app upgrade introduces the ability to select your character from the game's statistics menu, so you can always put your skills to the test with your favourite slugger.

Sticking with characters, five new ones can be unlocked by completing various tasks, such as collecting 1000 crates and making 5000 kills.

Check out the screenshot below this article for a peek at the new personalities, which include Super Meat Boy's Meat Boy.

Furthermore, Vlambeer has tweaked Super Crate Box's controls based on user feedback, has added the ability to "Jump & Shoot", and has thrown in the option to switch the game's A and B buttons.

Super Crate Box's App Store description warns that one of the game's various heroes has been ruthlessly taken hostage and will only be released once 40 million crates have been collected.

"Help us out rescuing her so we can stop worrying about that and start worrying about getting you a new goal for us to unlock more iOS-exclusive content & features!" the description reads.

You can grab the Pocket Gamer Silver Award-winning Super Crate Box from the App Store as a Universal app for just 69p / 99c.
