As gamers, we've been programmed to lust after stars since the days of Super Mario - and now, we have an entirely new reason to love them.

The Pocket Gamer Silver Award-winning Star Thief has dropped its $2.99 / £1.99 asking price to the enticing price of 'free' for a limited time.

We couldn't figure the reason for the sale - given that Star Thief hit the App Store back in June - but developer Bright Night Games shed some light on the sale for us with a simple line in the update notes.

"I've decided to make the app FREE without ads since it hasn't been getting much love lately."

Free game, no ads, and no IAP... what's not to like here?

The answer to us was 'not much' as the quirky casual-friendly star scroller won us over with its charming gameplay. The screen scrolls right to left, and your job is to tap on as many stars as possible to clear a level.

In our review of Star Thief we called it "impeccably bright and cheerful" before noting that it's really "a game about overcoming panic" in disguise.

"It may be simple, but it's far from easy" our reviewer Rob Hearn said in closing, and while Star Thief itself might not be simple - the decision to add it to your iOS device of choice for free sure is.
