Slots & Daggers is a chance-based adventure from the publishers of CloverPit

Ever since Balatro first transformed poker into an exciting roguelike deckbuilder, we've seen plenty of other developers put their own spin on everything from slot machines to scratchards. And Slots & Daggers is hoping to offer a similar twist on the format, with a roguelike adventure where what you spin is what you use in battle.

Set to arrive on iOS and Android later this month, Slots & Daggers sees you take on the role of an adventurer in a weird fantasy world. Your objective, as usual, is to head out on quests, defeat enemies and acquire loot. But to do so you'll have to spin a slot machine-like device and make use of the equipment it offers you.

Take on the one-armed bandit

Slots & Daggers offers plenty of interesting content to explore, from its strange and varied cast of enemies to a bumping hip-hop soundtrack and engaging acquisition of treasure being spat out by the machine. Planning and reflexes are also needed in short minigames to make use of your abilities, keeping the action engaging despite the randomness.

It is, however, a short experience at around 4-8 hours. But coming to us from developer Friedmann, who also worked on the equally short Summerhouse, it comes across as an experience as much as a game. 

Personally, I find it quite intriguing that the usually rather unpleasant act of gambling has been slowly transformed into something a lot more approachable and pleasant. Slots & Daggers may not be that long, but judging by what we've seen from trailers and critical reaction to its Steam release, it could well be worth a look on release.
