Guide missiles with your frantic fingers in Sky Patrol, now out on iOS

After bringing Sky Patrol to Windows Phone [buy] last year, Beartrap Games has finally been able to see it take off on iOS today.

It's a game in which you draw paths with your finger from the bottom of the screen and up for missiles to soar along. You can add wiggles and spirals if you like - the missile will still fly along your dashed line.

You can also switch to other ammo types, such as the bombs, which you tap to see fall to the ground, taking out enemy tanks and ships.

The idea is to intercept incoming missile fire and enemy pilots before they can damage your convoy. If your convoy gets wrecked then so do you.

The result is a finger-food version of your traditional vertically-scrolling shmup. It's much slower, which may put some people off, but it doesn't feel slow when you play it yourself.

It looks slow as the focus isn't on moving or dodging a ship. What you need to pay attention to when watching any footage of Sky Patrol is how many lines are being drawn.

It's a game that works well specifically on the touchscreen. It's actually quite frantic at times. Especially when you need to wait for ammo to replenish as you watch a wall of missiles close in on your convoy.

On top of having to use the right ammo type to take out different enemies, and dealing with big cartoon bosses, it's quite a tough if friendly-looking shmup.

So, if you do like shmups, or games that feel good on a touchscreen, consider picking up Sky Patrol for £1.49 / $1.99 on the App Store.
