If you haven't already had a chance to play Retro Bowl, then you're missing out on one of the best American football games on mobile currently available. But if you're planning on finally dipping your toes in, or you're a consummate fan, you'll be glad to know that Retro Bowl+ on Apple Arcade is getting a major relaunch and overhaul, this time with the backing of a massive organisation.
That's right, Retro Bowl is getting official endorsement from the American NFL, as it becomes NFL Retro Bowl '25. The relaunch will see the addition of famous faces from the NFL roster, real teams and more. All of this is bundled with the existing deep and interactive football-management gameplay that's all represented by glorious crunchy pixel art.
Unfortunately, regular players will have to stick with the (still great) Retro Bowl, as NFL Retro Bowl '25 is the next in a long line of Apple Arcade exclusives. But if there was any reason to consider getting a subscription, this might be it.
Often, football games like the perennial NFL series from EA Sports, have often been criticised for prioritising graphics over gameplay. Many have pointed out features being removed from newer versions, and the slow degrading of the core simulation experience. But Retro Bowl has consistently offered something for everyone, as long as they're not the kind to be scared off by some retro graphics.
And with this new endorsement and the addition of official NFL content, it could very well be that NFL Retro Bowl '25 becomes the defining experience on console.
