During today's Playdate Community Direct, it was revealed that developer Pixel Ghost is working on an official port of the classic point-and-click adventure game Shadowgate. It's set to launch for the adorable retro-inspired console sometime in 2024.

Chances are the name Shadowgate rings a bell, but if you are unfamiliar, it's a point-and-click that first launched back in 1987, when it became popular for its numerous puzzles and plentiful ways to meet an untimely end. The game has been re-released many times over the years, but this is the first time, to my knowledge at least, that you can play it on a teeny tiny yellow console with a built-in crank.

Discussing the game, Ollie Coe, Pixel Ghost Director, said: “Shadowgate was a very important game for me growing up! It’s a game that my dad and I used to play when I was a child and it has repeatedly found its way back into my life as I’ve grown older."

“The opportunity to work with Zojoi and develop the port for Playdate was one I couldn’t resist! I think it will be a perfect fit for the wonderful little Playdate console and I look forward to updating on the progress of the project as we move forwards.”

Shadowgate PD is planned to release in 2024, with no specific date right now. However, there are plenty of other great games available on the Playdate to enjoy while you wait, with several new additions arriving recently.

If you're interested in the handheld console itself, you can head to the official website, where it's available for pre-order. The Playdate has proven popular since its release, meaning a wait until late 2023 for it to ship out to you if you put down a deposit today.
