Sony sued for using patented technology in PSP
Fined $18.5 million for 'borrowing' ideas for its wireless apparatus
No one likes having to pay out money they weren't expecting to have to just before Christmas. So spare a little thought for poor Sony, who has just been found liable for infringing a technology patent and ordered to cough up $18.5 million as a result.
Agere Systems filed the suit against Sony two years ago for potential infringement on patents regarding "wireless local area network apparatus". And – as reported by PSP Fanboy –the courts have just ruled in the company's favour, ordering Sony to hand over the readies for wilfully using Agere's technology in devices that include PSP.
All we can say is Sony will be hoping to sell a lot of extra PSPs and copies of LocoRoco 2 this Christmas to make that lot back up again.
