Sony Japan has announced that since launching the new Slim & Lite model on September 20th, some 580,000 units have made their way into the hands of players.

To put it into perspective, this figure dwarfs the equivalent period for the release of the original version at the end of 2004 – although it's worth pointing out that its retail performance was significantly affected by the limited number of units available at the time.

No such shortages for Slim & Lite, though, which previously sailed past the 300,000 mark in just three days.

It would be interesting to compare the numbers with those of both the US and Europe but Sony has yet to divulge such figures.
