The latest Japanese hardware sales figures are in and, if you've been following our weekly sales update stories, you might not be too shocked to learn PSP has turned up at number one. Again.

Sony's PSP sold 58,861 units last week, while for once its nearest competitor was DS with 48,884, just ahead of its home console cousin Wii (48,480).

According to reports, these latest sales figures mean PSP has sold nearly two million units in total over the first six months in Japan alone (1,964,461 to be more precise). Which confirms the handheld as by far the most successful system in Japan this year in terms of sales. Hardly surprising considering the amount of time it has spent at the top spot in the charts but still an impressive accomplishment for Sony.

Now, let's see a strategy for attaining a similar performance in the west, shall we?
