Sony's new model of PSP, the PSP-3000, will apparently come with firmware v4.20 pre-installed. That's accorded to a hands-on with the console posted over at Eurogamer.

The new firmware - which is a step up from the current firmware v4.05 - includes a 'USB auto-connect' option, which automatically switches your handheld to USB mode when a cable is connected. That's provided you're not in the middle of a game of course.

It also comes with a 'flicker reduction' option - designed around PSP-3000's new ability to play games on a TV by through a special adaptor and composite cable.

Presumably this firmware update will be available to the rest of us mere mortals with only a PSP-2000 (or - whatever next - an original phat PSP).

The new console goes on sale across Europe in mid-October. Look out for it, and the new firmware it brings with it, then.
