Nokia looking into 3D multi-touch

It seems that Apple’s competitors are finally getting around to matching the iPhone’s touchscreen interface technology.

Nokia, however, appears to be looking well beyond current standards for its future devices. A recent patent application from the company reveals an intriguing 3D multi-touch proposition that could have some very interesting applications, particularly for games.

It looks to be an evolution of current technology, with a mixture of a capacitive screen and a number of force sensors that track how hard and in which direction you’re pressing the screen.

Combined with some interesting tactile feedback technology also being looked into by Nokia, we could be seeing the introduction of genuine three dimensional touch to our mobile phones in the not-too-distant future.
