Hold off the last rites, will you?

The next eight days in handheld games

Hold off the last rites, will you?

"It's still breathing," onlookers may have remarked in an alternate ending to King Kong, but it's not something they could as easily say of the handheld release schedule, which after last week's near-death experience is still refusing to show signs of life.

In fact, as predicted, it's suffered something of a relapse, with the delay of Spin Out, the only title (on any format) originally due for release this week. It's now expected October 20th.

Looking ahead, the prognosis is more positive. Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror leads the recovery on PSP next Friday, backed up by the brains of Carol Vorderman's Sudoku and the brawn of the latest Madden, the latter also appearing on EA's new favourite handheld, the DS.

And then comes September, a month that should see the seemingly lifeless handheld release schedule suddenly grab you by the arm when you least expect it, horror movie style.

"Mother of God, it's alive!" the crowd would no doubt scream. But that's the sequel and so we'll leave the details until next week.

Out Friday August 25th
Carol Vorderman's Sudoku (PSP)
Madden 07 (DS)
