He's no actor but the action's looking good

As action heroes go, Syphon Filter's Gabriel Logan has always been seen as something of a B-list operative. As a character, he's somehow too square-jawed and straight-laced to be ranked alongside Snake or Sam Fisher, which is perhaps ironic since the quality of the Syphon Filter games continues to rise.

Certainly PSP owners have reason to pleased with Logan's appearances: 2006's Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror PSP game was one of the year's best, and the forthcoming Logan's Shadow is already on our wanted list.

But it's the dichotomy between the character and the game that's most obvious from the first game trailer released by Sony:

The cutscenes, which kickstart the story of the disappearance of Logan's long-term partner Lian Xing, are much as you might expect, with Logan's less-than-expressive facial animation and gruff voice acting masking the concern he feels when Lian's branded a double agent by the top brass.

However, when it's time for in-game action (and thus we can't see Logan's chops), everything's much more impressive, with underwater scenes, sniping from helicopters, the sneaky breaking of the necks of guards, as well as plenty of random shooting from cover.
