Eidos abandons Rockpool Games studio
Mobile layoffs in Manchester
More sad news as the economy crumbles - Eidos has closed down its mobile games development studio, Rockpool, leaving 14 staff unemployed after others were presumably found positions within sister companies Ironstone Partners and SoGoPlay.
Rockpool Games will be sorely missed after the quality of such mobile titles as Sonic The Hedgehog 2: Dash!, The Club and Worms 2007.
"As a company we need to focus our efforts on high-quality titles that will deliver long-term franchise value, and in these incredibly challenging and competitive times we need to pro-actively manage our cost base," was the company’s rather cryptic farewell to GamesIndustry.biz.
The Manchester-based developer was acquired by Eidos in February of 2007, but ever since Eidos signed a distribution deal with EA Mobile and posted some perturbing figures related to Lara Croft’s latest adventure, it seems the gaming giant decided it no longer needs an in-house mobile development studio.
