Nintendo defies the credit crunch

DSi will cost more than the DS

This may be the most catastrophic winter the UK has seen since the last ice age, but spring is just around the corner, and so is the European release of Nintendo’s DSi.

Though no official date has been set, Our Easter celebrations this year may well be enhanced by the ability to take pictures of our various eggs, as well as our fat faces all covered in chocolate, and manipulate the images. And play slightly different games, of course.

But we’ll be doing so at a price, and perhaps not the price we were hoping for. In an interview with investors, Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata has disclosed that the DSi is unlikely to retail at the same price as the DS.

“[C]onsidering the current foreign currency exchange rates, there is no possibility of selling DSi overseas with the same price as DS Lite at all. There will have to be a difference in price.”

As a consequence, Iwata sees the two DS generations selling side by side, rather than interest converging on one or the other. He declined to speculate on ratios, saying, “we will have to see how people react to the announcement."

With a shrug, I suspect.
