After soft-launching back in 2021 as a beta and staying that way since, the official full launch of Mighty Doom is out into the world now. This miniature cutesy version of the heavy metal violence simulator that is the Doom series takes the franchise in a new direction with bite-sized versions of the characters and demons from the games based on the mini statues you could find as collectibles within Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal.

Mighty Doom is not meant to be taken as seriously as its counterparts, and it knows this. Using the groundwork of a hyper-violent and dark series like Doom but replacing all the black metal parts with cute, smaller versions of themselves is a wonderful satirical take on the series, and basing them off what were real in-game collectables in the modern games within the Doom franchise is a rather genius move if you ask me.

As for gameplay, Mighty Doom is a top-down shooter rather than an FPS like its siblings, but it does take bits and pieces from the traditional Doom games too. Doom has always been an FPS series based around the concept of “never stop moving and never stop shooting”, and Mighty Doom incorporated this into the fast-paced frenetic gameplay it has too.

There’s not much story to speak of, as this is clearly a game meant to be enjoyed casually and for fun. While that might not appeal to the fanbase of the Doom series, as they’ve come to enjoy the more intense action the games offer, it’s a fun spinoff that is experimenting with the formula in unique ways, so I’d say it’s at least worth a gander.
