Kraino Origins, a brand new retro platformer, launches for iOS
Fans of retro platformer-based action games will be excited to hear that Kraino Origins, developed by Angel Dorantes, has launched on iOS. This 2D side-scroller harkens back to the NES era of gaming and sees you take on the role of a grim-reaper-like figure who is to explore the world wielding a massive scythe, doing battle against various demons and monsters as you seek to defeat each boss.
Kraino Origins wears its inspirations on its sleeve, immediately making anyone who looks at it think of old-school titles like Castlevania or Ghouls ‘N Goblins. You’ll be experiencing the game from a 2D perspective, each challenging level filled with platforming challenges that are made even harder by the presence of various enemies seeking to block your progress.
As is typically the case with games like this, you’ll of course unlock different upgrades that make your progression easier like air dashes or stronger attacks. And you’ll need those too, as in being inspired by those older games, this one is quite tough much like its predecessors. Checkpoints are rare, and bosses especially are a pure test of skill and wits.
The general vibe of Kraino is a spooky sort of atmosphere, but is also quite aware of itself and is often quite cartoonish in its designs too. To make this atmosphere even more nostalgic, there are also a ton of retro graphics filters you can choose to use. These can make your screen take on a greenish haze like old Gameboy games or pixel art styles that look adjacent to something like Shovel Knight, and a ton of others too.
