Santa Monica firm ICS Mobile is preparing for the release of its location-based iTag Live game on iPhone.

The free game is hugely ambitious, being a location-based game of high-tech tag, where players use their iPhone's GPS feature to find opponents, and the camera to tag them - while chatting to the rest of their team via voice conference calls.

Up to eight players can compete in individual games, which take the form of Team Elimination gameplay. The game works over 3G or wi-fi.

The developer has put a bunch of YouTube tutorials up to show how the game works, and there's an iTag Nation website that'll clearly become the hub for the game's community.

Although iTag Live will be free, there will also be a paid-for iTag Live Premium launching at a later date.

Features will include Facebook Connect integration, personal and team rankings, ratings, more weapons and armour, "accelerometer activated grenade throws", ranked games and private rooms, and more game formats - including a 'free for all' mode.
