Developer BorderLeap - who has created a ton of different games like Drop Flip, Alpha Omega, and the Apple Arcade exclusive Patterned - has revealed the release date for their latest project. A project made in collaboration with different popular artists all across the world, Illustrated is a unique puzzle game that blends jigsaw and word puzzles as well as expands your knowledge of art.

Illustrated is a unique take on a typical jigsaw puzzle, seeing you begin with a rough sketch of a piece of art to begin with, alongside a small few words from the artist’s story behind whatever piece you’re working on. From there, it’s up to you to piece together both sides, using your jigsaw skills as well as finding what words go where to reveal the full story.

That’s pretty much the entire gameplay loop, but to me personally, this is a really cool idea for a puzzler. I think adding in the word portion especially takes this beyond a typical jigsaw puzzle game, as it allows you to understand the piece you’re working on even better and really learn what the meaning behind the art is straight from the artist’s mouth.

In terms of mechanics, it also presents a way to test two separate portions of your puzzle skills, asking you to test your jigsaw and word search skills all in one go. Add in the fact that this particular way of making a puzzler sort of respects art even more than your usual game, and it makes for a combo that tells me this is a really respectful and, frankly, just really cool puzzle game.
