Hill Climb Racing is a game that sounds exactly what the title says. The goal is the drive a vehicle through various locations as far as you can. While doing so, you'll ride through hills of all sorts. Your objective is to stay balanced and not flip forward or backward.

There are different cars and areas you can unlock as you play. It's quite the physics-based driving game where sometimes, even a small tilt backward or forward can lead to failure. So think of it as a balancing act but with cars essentially.

There is an excellent walkthrough of the sequel, Hill Climb Racing 2 written right here on Pocket Gamer, but if you're new to the experience, we'll give you a few tips on how to tackle this trippy racing game for your mobile device.

No need to go full speed all of the time

When doing single-player runs, you don't need to go blazing fast each time. It might be a wise idea to take your time moving through the various terrain. Remember, this isn't necessarily a game about speed. It's more about balance, and not falling over.

Yes, I know; when you're playing a game involving cars, it's easy to put the pedal to the metal, right? And sure, going at a quicker pace will let you pick up ground swifter. That said, staying upright is the name of the game and it's important to keep this in mind.

If you are going at a certain speed, just know when to slow down. Watch the track for those pesky little hills that are just waiting for you to flip over on your head. You'll get used to pacing yourself once you get a few rounds in and you may appreciate the scores in the end.

Utilize your brakes

This kind of coincides with pacing yourself but using the brakes at the right moments can really save you from a fall. You can take your foot (or in this case, finger) off the accelerator to slow down too. However, if you need to bring things down more quickly, then pump those brakes.

You're going to be doing a lot of back and forth between accelerating and braking so definitely familiarize yourself with brake timing. It's a good thing that there is a brake button because Hill Climb Racing does kind of play like an endless runner, and in those games, there is no stop button.

You can improve your braking and traction in the game and we'll discuss that in a minute. But finding that perfect balance is what the game is essentially all about. And no need to come to complete stops of course. Just gently hit the brakes to slow yourself down before revving up again.

Upgrade your ride in the shop

If you feel like you're struggling, they have no fear, the shop is here. This area of Hill Climb Racing allows you to improve different aspects of your vehicle. These upgrades affect your engine, suspension, tires, and four-wheel drive (4WD). Each one of these will improve your game nicely.

The engine upgrade will let you climb up hills easier while also allowing you to jump higher. This will give you the opportunity to perform tricks easier which improves your score. Suspension helps with stability, especially on bumps in the road and at higher speeds.

Tire upgrades also help with traction and you can never have enough of that. Lastly, 4WD gives you an overall better handling of your ride. This makes it arguably the most important upgrade in the game since the game is about maintaining your control in hilly locations. Each of these upgrades will be helpful and they can be improved 10 times each so take advantage.
