  • Hero Dash: RPG is a newly-released mix of auto-battler and shoot 'em up, out now on iOS
  • It offers a mixture of the two in terms of gameplay as your character traverses a battlefield and stops to fight
  • Customise and upgrade them with rewards dropped from crystals

There are some releases which revolutionise genres and change assumptions about gaming as we know it. Others perfect mechanics and produce fine examples of what they set out to do. Hero Dash: RPG is neither of those things, but it's perfectly fine for what it is.

In terms of gameplay if you've read titles like Hero Dash: RPG before then you'll know exactly what to expect. You play as the titular hero dashing along through the battlefield and alternating between RPG-style turn-based battles and the blasting of crystals to nab rewards and upgrade your character.

Yes, it's not exactly revolutionary but at the same time what do you expect with a name like that? What we can tell you at least is that Hero Dash: RPG looks to be a competently produced entry in the auto-battler, shoot 'em up RPG-esque genre. And while it may not stand out it is refreshing to have something with a sense of aesthetic cohesion that's not so in-your-face.

Yes, I know I may be being a bit harsh on Hero Dash: RPG, but in my defence it is a bit difficult to know exactly what to write about it. This isn't exactly a standout release after all, but as I wrote above that doesn't necessarily mean it's bad either. Hero Dash: RPG seems perfectly competent in its execution, it has nice, cutesy art, but it does depend on your tastes for the genre it's in as to whether you'll want to play it.

In the meantime, if you do want to branch out and try something new there's a whole host of other options to consider. If nothing in our latest news coverage grabs you why not try Jump King, which Will Quick has just taken a gander at?
