Back in the '90s, a small virtual pet called Tamagotchi was introduced to the world.

For some reason or another, Tamagotchi took over the world for a while. We spent day after day feeding and cleaning a few squealing pixels, and cleaning up its giant poop.

Tamagotchi is primitive by today's standards, of course, which is why Impending has created its new iPhone game Hatch (a.k.a. Tamagotchi 3.0).

Poke me

The vibrant cartoon art style of Hatch is adorable, and so is the Fugu pup that will become your pet.

You can stroke, poke, and squeeze your Fugu pup after you've chosen its name and colour. You'll also need to feed it apples, which grow on the trees at least once a day.

You do all of that to encourage your new pet to trust you. Oh, and to keep it happy. If you succeed on both counts, you'll earn stickers to share with friends, and accessories to dress your pup up in and to decorate its home.

You can also unlock a camera to take pictures so you can share your surroundings with your pup. It turns out that your pet is more interested in photobombing as you line up shots, though.

If you leave Hatch open while plugging your phone into a socket to recharge, incidentally, your pup will jump into bed and invite you to tuck it in.

If you're ready to adopt a Fugu pup of your own, you can purchase Hatch from the App Store now for £1.49 / $1.99.
