Friday Freebie: Bird Strike, Astro Ranch and yet more LBP duds...

| Friday Freebie

With the whole country grounded by errant volcanic ash, holidays, business trips and recreational flights will have to wait. What better way to while away the time than playing games?

But with your money tied up in the airline's coffers until the ticket is refunded, you’ll most likely want to hang on to your pennies. The Friday Freebie is here to help.

DSiWare free stuff? No, of course not, but you can always monitor the imposing ash cloud on the Forecast Channel, and get the drop on your friends when flights are rescheduled.

PSN is scant again this week too, with only a LittleBigPlanet Temples theme costume available at no cost. But it’s worth noting that the PSP Favourite promotion ends today, and whilst these titles are only discounted, they’ll be even less free by tomorrow.

As ever, the App Store is positively overflowing with steals, and whilst there hasn’t been a Trawler Report this week, make your first port of call the latest one if you didn’t check it last week.

And of course, treat your ears to the Pocket Gamer podcast, in which the team creates a parallel universe, discusses iPhone OS 4.0, rifles through the Rumour Miner's loot sack, and Rob guesses the weights of his co-hosts.

On the subject of free iPhone games, where to begin? Well, Bird Strike is still free following its recent encounter with FreeAppADay, as are Astro Ranch, and the C64 Emulator (which will now require no initial purchase indefinitely).

Be ready for tomorrow, too, as Cobra Command will be free all day.

On top of that, the latest App Store update includes a couple of gems in the form of Chalkboard Stunts and Across Ages EX.

The first is an impressive physics based driving game, which features a comprehensive (though slightly cut down unless you upgrade to ‘Pro’) level editor and the ability to download and share levels. There are plenty of pre-made stages, too, so this one will keep you busy for a long time.

The second is a visually charming RPG which features lovely 16-bit style visuals and plenty of time travelling puzzles. You only get the first chapter, but it’s a pleasant enough jaunt with no financial outlay. We’ll let you decide whether you want to upgrade or not.
