Whilst most flights have been intermittently grounded in recent weeks thanks to volcanic ash, Firemint isn't one to fear force majeure, and has taxied a new iPhone and iPod touch Flight Control update to the runway.

The free update includes a new map, which previously debuted in Flight Control HD, on the iPad, called ‘Windy Airfield’. A wind sock in the middle of the screen (and alarm) denotes which of the four runways will remain open, and which will close.

You’ll need to think on your feet to redirect planes as and when required to do so.

On top of this, the visuals have had a spruce and now look brighter and more colourful, and the iPad’s ‘safe fast-forward’ feature has been introduced. Rather than simply normal and fast forward, the safe mode will automatically revert to normal speed if a collision is imminent.

The smaller, but no less appealing, addition of remembered sound and music settings round up the changes.

To celebrate, Firemint has released an iPhone wallpaper, which can be downloaded for free from their website.

This kind of update could set a precedent for iPad features retrospectively augmenting iPhone games, which can only be good for gamers.

If you haven’t already got it, Flight Control is available now from the App Store - you'll find a direct link below.
