News that Chillingo's Cut the Rope has notched up 2 million paid downloads after three weeks on sale makes EA's purchase of the publisher look extremely well timed.

The new benchmark figure suggests downloads of the game maintaining their pace, with developer ZeptoLab's 99c physics title amassing its second million about the same time that it took to hit its first million.

Sales celebration

"Cut the Rope continues to break records with leading, international sales," said Chillingo co-general manage Chris Byatte.

"Our new partnership with EA enables us to expand Om Nom's prospects, visibility and reach to make more of an impact than ever before."

The two million figure appears to represent downloads made from the App Store as a whole, pooling together sales of Cut the Rope on iPhone (99c) with those of iPad release Cut the Rope HD ($1.99).

How long is a piece of rope

Whatever the format, however, ZeptoLab is confident Chillingo's new owner can keep the sales rolling in.

"Chillingo has done a great job for us in publishing Cut the Rope on the Apple App Store," said ZeptoLabe CTO Efim Voinov.

"Now with their acquisition by EA, we see more growth opportunities available for us in the future."

Earlier this month, Chillingo pronounced Cut the Rope as the fastest selling title on the App Store to date after sales hit 1 million in the game's first ten days.

The title topped App Store charts in the US, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Sweden and Finland.
