Crytek unveils the Cryengine V, a pay what you want engine focused on VR
Plus, buy a tree for charity
It's quite an interesting turn of events for developers. Every engine is trying to court them with attractive business models. From Valve's free Source 2 to Unreal Engine 4's monthly fee, there's something for every budget and every developer.
Crytek is trying something new though, with a "Pay what you want" approach to its latest version of the famous Cryengine dubbed Cryengine V.
This approach is interesting and definitely unique. It's more akin to what Humble is doing with its famous Humble Bundle. And right on time, Crytek has launched a bundle for its Cryengine assets. You can buy 3D trees and more and give all that money to charity.
This version of the Cryengine is built with VR in mind and focuses on optimization to ensure a stable framerate.
On top of that, Crytek also unveiled VRscore, a benchmarking tool built with Basemark.
Crytek also revealed a new VR experience called Sky Harbor and we should learn more about it soon, ahead of a planned summer launch on major VR HMDs.
You can now check it out over on the Crytek's official website.
