From Defender through Scramble, Choplifter and R-Type, side-scrolling shoot-'em-ups (or siscro-shmups as those of us in the business pretend to call them) was a genre that defined a generation of hardcore destruction dodging.

But surely those days are long gone?

Upstart UK publisher Alten8, which a couple of weeks ago announced a DS remake of Dreamcast game Cool Herders, begs to differ. It's cooking up Cosmos X2, which it claims builds on the best of those old-school traditions and will provide a perfect workout for our thumbs.

Apart from the attached screenshots and claims of 'hoards of spaceships and space debris', we've little to go on to verify such mighty boasts. To be honest, we haven't heard of developer Saturnine before, either.

Still, to receive interplanetary alerts as soon as more details emerge, don't forget to hit the 'Track It!' button.
