Cookie Clicker: What's Grandmapocalypse and should you start it

All you need to know about starting the Grandmapocalypse in Cookie Clicker, and the consequences of starting it.

Cookie Clicker: What's Grandmapocalypse and should you start it

Cookie Clicker is perhaps the god-emperor of casual games because the task is basic as are the controls. You start off with a simple screen showing you a large cookie and you just need to click on it. The more you click, the more cookies you get, and conveniently you've been transported to a universe where cookies serve as a viable currency. With the cookies you've clicked, you're able to visit a shop to spend them on things and hire employees that can get you more cookies. It may come as no surprise that the cornerstone of baking cookies is grandmas, and Cookie Clicker knows that too.

One of the first major upgrades you'll get for your cookie operations is bringing on a grandma. You'll quickly amass enough cookies to have a baking army of grandmas who will bake tirelessly to give you all the cookies you want. Though they may seem like sprites of the same elderly woman, the grandmas are not as sweet and innocent as they may seem. Sure, they'll make your cookie empire look a lot more wholesome on the service, but they hide dark powers. Yes, these senior pastry artisans can lead to an event called the Grandmapocalypse.

What is the Grandmapocalypse?

If the name didn't give it away, the Grandmapocalypse is Cookie Clicker's version of a world-ending event. When started, the Grandma Matriarchs will make themselves known as they take on more disturbing and aggressive appearances. It also causes the parasitic creatures known as Wrinklers to appear and start feeding on the large cookie. The further the event progresses, the more Wrinklers will show up and the more likely that the Grandma Matriarchs will become Angered. It also has the seemingly negative effect of replacing a percentage of Golden Cookies with Wrath Cookies which can work against production.

Should you start the Grandmapocalypse and how?

Although it sounds scary and looks creepy, the Grandmapocalypse is ultimately recommended for those looking to really boost their cookie-baking business. This is because of two key elements: The Wrath Cookies and Wrinklers. The former has the potential to be just as beneficial as Golden Cookies with the option to ignore clicking on them if you don't want to take the risk.

The Wrinklers are the real stars. Each one that arrives (up to 12 total with the Elder Spice upgrade) will reduce your Cookies-per-Second (CpS) by 5 percent. However, they actually accumulate the cookies within themselves, adding interest to them over time. Additional Wrinklers will have a cumulative effect causing interest to increase. Then, after some time, you can click to pop the Wrinklers and get a ton of cookies back, then you can do it all over again.

How to start Grandmapocalypse?

To start the Grandmapocalypse, you need to follow several key steps. First, you need to fulfil the conditions of having at least seven different types of Grandmas. This will give you access to the Bingo Center/Research Facility which will let you buy the "One Mind" upgrade. This will officially begin the event.

To reach the next stage, keep working until you can afford the "Communal Brainsweep" upgrade. This will cause more Wrath Cookies to appear as well as Wrinklers to appear much faster.

Finally, you need to progress through production and upgrades until you afford the "Elder Pact". This will transform the Grandma Matriarchs into demonic entities and replace all possible Golden Cookies with Wrath Cookies. Wrinklers will appear even faster at this point allowing you to take advantage of their cookie-interest effects.

As a side note, if you're going for completion, you'll need to trigger the Grandmapocalypse, anyway. Don't worry, though, as you can always buy upgrades to stall the event at certain stages if you're having second thoughts.
