It's always interesting when a new developer releases its first game, so it must be doubly interesting when a new publisher releases a developer's debut game.

That's the situation with US studio End Boss Games' Chicken Rescue, which just happens to be the first game from new publisher Ayopa Games - the product of ex-Chillingo and Storm8 chap Johnny Coghlan and ex-Blizzard and Logitech chap Elliott Chin.

As for the game itself, it mixes up some traditional iOS tilt puzzling with some newer business models.

The basic gameplay is you're controlling Chicken Mama - using either tilt or virtual joystick - around grid-based levels.

All your little chicks have been lost so you have to track them out. Once you've run into them, they will follow you around as you led them to the exit.

In addition, you collect flowers to boost your points total, use your boost button to crash through crates and other obstacles, as well as using stones as launch pads to get you into otherwise inaccessible areas. You'll have to avoid watery hazards, spiky plants, lumbering pigs and angry bees.

Your performance is rated out of three stars, which gives you gold coins that can be used level up Chicken Mana in terms of levels of attributes such as health, or the number of points or hearts dropped per level.

These feed into unlocking special skins including the spotted Guinea Hen, robot chicken, and various undead poultry too. Hence, you can purchase additional coins as IAP if you want to upgrade and unlock items more quickly.

Still, overall, the experience is aimed at a younger age group, with the 24 levels full of cute graphics and bright colours.

Chicken Rescue will be available for iPhone and iPad as a universal app on Thursday 3 November, priced 99c.
