About a year later than expected, an indie action-adventure that feels like the mutant space baby of Waking Mars and Super Metroid has just been launched on iPad. Its name: Capsized.

You play as a stocky little space traveller, who has been marooned on a mysterious alien planet. You'll explore perilous environments to locate your crew and escape.

You'll fight otherworldly lifeforms with various high-tech weapons, use your jetpack to navigate the game's non-linear levels, and use a grappling hook to manipulate the environment.

Isolation station

I've just played through the first level, and I'd say the controls can be a little finicky. Generally, though, the dev has done a good job of translating a complicated controller-based game to iOS.

Capsized is essentially a twin-stick shooter, so you'll use two virtual analogue nubs to move and shoot. But, you can also tap on the environment to grab hold of rocks or tether your grappling hook to the ceiling.

Capsized

Capsized comes with a 13-level campaign mode and a handful of challenge modes like Survival (with endless waves of enemies) and Armless (where you must survive without weapons).

The game also has in-app purchases. Of course.

So, there's an in-game shop where you'll find items like weapons, ammo, upgrades, health packs, extra lives, shields, and jetpack fuel. You can buy them with in-game or real-world cash.

Capsized is a handsome little game, with loads of content and a truly retro sensibility. Interested? It's yours for £1.99 / $2.99.
