  • Blockcharted mixes Tetris and Super Meat Boy in retro fashion
  • Dodge falling blocks and cope with the increasing pace of gameplay
  • Use power-ups to avoid falling death, and dodge lava to boot in Inferno mode

What do you get when you mix the fast-paced puzzle gameplay of Tetris and a hardcore platformer such as Super Meat Boy? Well, you get Blockcharted, where the terrifying idea of being stuck under the blocks in Tetris comes to life.

A free release from solo developer Jimmy Nollet, Blockcharted is exactly as I described. You simply need to leap from block to block as they fall, staying out of the way of all the additional falling shapes before they crush you in their path. As you survive, things go faster and faster until you inevitably miss and physics takes its course.

Fortunately, you won't just be relying on your reaction times and fast thumbs alone. You can also nab a variety of power-ups to help you through. Be that slowing time to make it easier to dodge, freezing blocks in place to give you a chance to get out of the way, or simply teleporting out of danger.

Blockcharted also comes with two different modes in this release. Classic mode lets you clamber your way to the skies, while Inferno mode adds the extra danger of a slowly rising pool of lava forcing you upwards. Even if you're not a platforming fan, if you've got a love of puzzles, this is sure to satisfy your craving.

All of this is accompanied by disconcertingly cheerful chiptune music and cutesy stylised graphics. Blockcharted is also free to play, meaning you've got little to lose except your temper with this fast-paced, block-dodging platformer.
