Mythic Heroes: Idle RPG Interview: IGG discuss how its Idle RPG allows players to get creative

Mythic Heroes: Idle RPG is a brand new Idle RPG from game publishing giant, IGG (of Lords Mobile fame). It received its global launch on the app stores last weekend, and has wasted no time in garnering high-praise for its gorgeous art style and spectacular battle sequences.

Following on from our hands-on look at the game, we spoke with Ciaran Gallagher, Community Manager at IGG, to discuss Mythic Heroes’ development and the features that help make it stand out from the competition.

What aspects of Mythic Heroes: Idle RPG are you most excited to share with players?

I’m most excited for players to see how much strategic depth we’ve packed into Mythic Heroes. Each Hero has unique abilities that make them more effective in different situations. You can build a rushdown team with assassin Heroes and high burst damage, or you can build a sustain team that deals damage over time through poison and debuffs. With auto-sync leveling, it’s easy to make those adjustments since you don’t need to spend resources to level up Heroes outside of your core team. That’s the kind of gameplay that we’re trying to encourage. Where players use their brains to overcome much tougher challenges than their power level would suggest.

What differentiates Mythic Heroes from other idle games?

We think our theme and art style differentiates us from other idle games. Unlike other games that follow an existing IP’s lore, we’ve taken inspiration from the real world! Many gacha games use an anime art style but we think ours is somewhere between Western comic books and Japanese manga.

Also, we focus on strategic freedom with QoL features like auto-sync leveling. In other gacha rpg’s, players often invest all their resources in one team. We want players to find creative ways to get past difficult challenges.

What was the inspiration to meld real world mythologies together in one story?

I would say that it was a collective respect and appreciation for traditional myths. Our studio houses many people from many different cultures, and overall, we were all inspired creatively from stories we heard as children. We believe that humans are essentially storytellers, and mythology seems to speak to all of us in a very unique way. We want this universality to be mirrored in the game. If goddesses or gods overlap in some way, we see it as "a rose by any other name" situation, where this highlights continuity of the human experience. If there are unique types of divine beings within certain areas, we tried to highlight how that spoke of a specific culture and environment.

What were the biggest challenges you faced during development, and how did you overcome them?

There were many challenges throughout the years of development. One that was an enduring issue was managing the file size of the game overall. We wanted to keep the file as small as possible, and we had to be very industrious to do so. We searched high and low for software which would help us streamline the animation process... We eventually found (and created) some unique systems for doing complicated animations efficiently. In the end, we were very happy with the results.

Also, COVID-19 complicated development, but we all adapted and found many ways to work together remotely. Maybe the most remarkable thing was that our studio had zero cases through the entire process!

What would you say to people who have never played an idle game before?

Idle games are a great companion. Whether you’re waiting for a matchmaking lobby, waiting in a line or waiting for the work day to end, our lives have a lot of downtime. That’s where an idle game fits! When I turn away from my desk and open Mythic Heroes, I’ll tap to claim rewards, start the auto-battle function and get back to work. When I look back on my next break, I’ve made progress and can push farther in the campaign. That progress can be reinvested into my team which helps me on the Leaderboards and opens more strategic choices. It’s a balance between active strategic gameplay and patient idle progression where there’s always a next level to aim for.

We’ve heard that you have many new features in the works. What can players expect as you add more to the game?

We have a lot of new features that we are excited to show players. Right now, we’re putting the final touches on a number of new Heroes that will expand the pantheons and cultures we explore. We will also be adding a lot more depth to the Guild v Guild Epic Showdowns. Finally, we love interacting with our community and our players can vote for new suggestions in our Discord. Based on those votes and comments we receive, we’ve pushed some highly requested quality-of-life features up our priority list. The future of Mythic Heroes is very bright and we want to get there alongside our players.

Mythic Heroes: Idle RPG is free-to-play with in-app purchases and is available for iOS and Android to download now. You can learn more about the game at the official website, mythicheroes.com.
