The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth for Vita is the biggest iteration of the roguelike yet

The Binding of Isaac is an action roguelike that you can replay for hours and hours and never beat even once.

You can learn how to deal with the grotesque enemies and unexpected traps in the poop-, piss-, and blood-filled dungeons.

But getting lucky by obtaining a powerful item often gives you better a chance of survival than learning from 'experience'.

You play a young boy called Isaac, who is chased into a foul underground series of tunnels and rooms by his god-fearing mother.

Isaac fires his tears at the enemies as he tries to beef up his powers by gambling items... and sometimes his life. It's all in preparation for facing his mother and the other demons further down in the stench.

Don't cry

It's a disgusting game, acceptable on account of its cartoon visuals. But what makes it gripping is its random generation, permadeath, and unlockables.

Like Spelunky, The Binding of Isaac is an ideal game for Vita. Fortunate, really, for that's just where the remake and expansion, The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth, is heading.

Those tough luck-of-the-draw quickfire play sessions are just perfect for portable gaming. You try for success, die, and then try again later when you're in the mood. In Rebirth, however, the quick-save feature will enable you to return to previous save games, too.

Rebirth is a totally remade game with a "demade" 16-bit art style. It will include the previous Flash versions of The Binding of Isaac and the Wrath of the Lamb expansion. However, it hasn't been made in Flash this time.

It will also feature another Wrath of the Lamb-sized expansion that contains a new final chapter, ending, two new playable characters, 150+ items, 25+ enemies, and 12+ bosses.

There will also be more rooms, secrets, and challenges to complete.

The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth

Perhaps the most delightful addition in Rebirth is two-player local co-op. There will not be an online co-op option.

Rebirth will also have varying difficulty settings. An easier option for those new to the game will be supplied. A harder option will be available to experienced players, too.

The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth is expected to debut on PS Vita, PC, and PS4 in early 2014.
