Legendary Mario and The Legend of Zelda creator Shigeru Miyamoto has confirmed that he's working on a Pikmin-themed cartoon series that will likely be released through Nintendo Video.

According to Miyamoto, these animated shorts will be released at some point before upcoming strategy title Pikmin 3 lands exclusively on the Wii U.

Nintendo's entertainment analysis and development manager has already showcased the first episode of this forthcoming series to website Polygon.

In this inaugural episode, Pikmin character Captain Olimar is caught blending and drinking what appears to be several red Pikmin. To cut a long story short, Olimar's tasty drink turns out to be just carrots.

How it came about

This first short was created by Miyamoto with the help of an external animation studio.

The F-Zero creator apparently used his 3DS's Flipnote Studio app to mock-up samples, which he later showed to the short's director.

"We really just want to take advantage of the Pikmin characters," Miyomoto said.

"We have started selling Shaun the Sheep videos, so we're continuing to look at ways to expand the eShop offerings. Nintendo 3DS is great for viewing 3D video content, so we wanted to look at ways to expand that offering."
