Apple awarded patent for Project Glass-esque AR-equipped glasses
A sight for sore eyes
Apple has just been awarded a new patent for special eyeglasses that would display applications, video content, images, maps, and overlay real-time information about your surroundings.
Y'know, like Google's Project Glass thingy.
Unlike Google's project, though, which uses LCD projectors placed directly in front of your eyes, Apple's effort - if it ever sees the light of day - would feature projectors located on the side of the glasses.
Augmented reality distortion field? The granted patent describes how the image would be pumped through a special glass to create the illusion of total immersion by landing directly in the user's pupils.
Apple's project would also feature two heads-up displays rather than just one, which would apparently increase immersion and prevent motion sickness.
Now, just because Apple has been awarded this patent, it doesn't mean the Cupertino-based company will ever implement the technology. We're sure the patent will come in handy in future court cases, though.
