Google has begun to share some information on its experimental (and somewhat sci-fi) augmented reality glasses.

A post by The Big G entitled 'Project Glass', which appeared on Google+ yesterday, offered the world its first glimpse of the snazzy AR specs, as well as a few details regarding the Mountain View-based company's hopes for the device.

According to posters Babik Parviz, Steve Lee, and Sebastian Thrun, "A group of us from Google[x] started Project Glass to build this kind of technology, one that helps you explore and share your world, putting you back in the moment."

"We're sharing this information now because we want to start a conversation and learn from your valuable input."

Sight beyond sight

Accompanying the text was a promotional video demonstrating how the device might be used in everyday life.

If the video is to be believed, the glasses will perform several functions currently performed by smartphones: audio and video calls, social media updates, map services, weather updates, and calendar and diary management.

We'll see whether Google's interactive goggles have consumer appeal when they hit store shelves, which could be as soon as the end of this year.
