Fragmentation rears its ugly head

We all know that fragmentation on Google's Android platform is a big issue for developers, with Android devices all around the world running different versions of the operating system at any one time.

Over on Google's Android Developers website, the firm has posted a table and pie chart indicating the current distribution of the Android OS across its userbase. Suffice it to say, it makes for very interesting reading.

Perhaps the most surprising statistic is that only 10.9 per cent of Android devices are currently running the latest version of Android: the eight-month-old Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0).

In fact, Gingerbread (version 2.3) is still the most widespread iteration of the Android OS, with 64 per cent of 'droid devices currently running it. 17.3 per cent of the Android userbase, meanwhile, are still gunning along with Froyo (version 2.2).

If you were wondering, by the way, Google's statistics are based on the number of Android devices that have accessed Google Play within the 14-day period ending on July 2nd, 2012.
