Welcome back, gadget fans, to another silicon-saturated, lithium-powered edition of the Pocket Picks round-up.

This week has been a bit of a mixed bag news-wise. On the downside, we caught wind of a virus-laden Instagram clone, and revealed that the future isn't bright for Windows Phone 7 phones.

Luckily, though, Samsung stepped in to lighten the mood, offering not one, but two delicious portions of Galaxy-related info. Is the number 'III' involved? You'd better believe it.

So, join us once more as we climb aboard the back of the smartphone news elephant and stomp through this week's Pocket Picks updates.

Samsung Galaxy S III unveiling scheduled for May 3rd

We've been on tenterhooks for some time regarding the upcoming successor to Samsung's wildly popular Galaxy S II handset.

A week ago, it looked like the world would get its first glimpse at the new smartphone on May 22nd. Since then, however, a teaser invitation sent by Sammy has found its way into press inboxes - one which brings the grand unveiling even closer than we'd hoped.

According to the invitation, journalists can come and "Meet the next Galaxy" at Earls Court Exhibition Centre, London, on Thursday May 3rd.

If you believe the hype, the Samsung Galaxy S III will pack a quad-core processor, and feature a Super AMOLED Plus display with a pixel density comparable to the Retina displays on Apple's iPhone 4 and 4S.

Fake Instagram app contains Android malware

If you're planning to download the Android version of Instagram, we suggest you source it directly from the Google Play Store - if you don't want a smartphone riddled with malware, that is.

You see, antivirus researchers at security software firm Sophos have discovered a rogue app masquerading as Instagram in some third-party Android app stores.

Though the app appears to be a copy of the real Instagram (albeit a slightly broken one), it contains the '??Andr/Boxer-F' trojan, which can send out SMS texts without the user's knowledge.

Apple sued over in-app purchases

A group of angry parents has decided to sue Apple over the ease with which children can spend large amounts of money through in-app purchases.

More and more mobile games now feature in-app purchases, a system by which developers can sell additional content directly to the user via a few quick taps.

However, the US parent group (led by attorney Garen Meguerian) is claiming that Apple has made it too easy for children to rack up huge bills via IAPs, with some of these virtual items and packages costing as much as £70.

Despite Apple adding password protection to App Store purchases, US district judge Edward Davila has allowed the claim to proceed.

Windows Phone 8 won't be available on current-gen phones

If you own a current-gen Windows Phone and have been holding your breath for the forthcoming Windows Phone 8 update, we suggest you breathe out right... now.

According to The Verge, a source within Microsoft has confirmed that the current generation of Windows Phone handsets will not be upgraded to Windows Phone 8 (otherwise known as Apollo), despite reports to the contrary.

This could be a nail in the coffin of the current batch of Windows Phone blowers - including the brand-new Lumia 900 - for customers may feel inclined to hold out for the next wave of handsets to make sure they don't get left behind.

Android Ice Cream Sandwich arrives on Galaxy S II

After what seems like a lifetime of waiting, owners of Vodafone-branded Samsung Galaxy S II handsets can now update their phones to Android Ice Cream Sandwich (a.k.a. Android 4.0).

Having finished putting Ice Cream Sandwich through its paces, Vodafone rolled out the latest version of Google's mobile operating system to its customers this week.

If you want to download the update immediately, you'll have to use Samsung's Kies desktop software, but Vodafone has promised that over-the-air updates will be possible any time now.

Unfortunately, owners of unbranded Galaxy S IIs will have to wait a little longer to get their hands on the update. Not long now, though...
