Nokia's flagship Windows Phone Lumia 900 looks set to undercut many of its rivals when it hits retail in the US next month.

Pinning down the handset's launch to 8 April, carrier AT&T has announced it will sell the phone on a standard two year contract for as low as $99.

Illuminating

It's a price point that appears to have taken many commentators by surprise.

AT&T's decision means the handset will come in at a lower price than the likes of iPhone 4S, which currently costs the carrier's customers between $199 and $399 when they sign up for the same contract according to AT&T's website.

HTC's Windows Phone-powered Titan II will also launch on the same day, with its RRP coming in at $199, again on a two year contract.

Lumia love

The news comes after a survey suggested Nokia's other Windows Phone handset in the region – the Lumia 710 – beat out Apple's iPhone in a T-Mobile customer satisfaction survey.

Nokia will be hoping the high-end 900 can enjoy the same success, helping the Finnish firm recapture market share in a territory where it's been decimated in recent years.

The Lumia 900 is also bound for launch across Europe, with its debut expected at some point in Q2 2012.
