New Android emulator CPSEmu allows 'droid gamers to play classic Capcom titles on their handset, including Marvel vs. Capcom, the Street Fighter Alpha series, and various iterations of Street Fighter II.

CPSEmu emulates Capcom's early '90s arcade system board CPS-2, meaning you can play just about any game that was launched on the hardware, including many of the finest fighters ever made.

Shoot-'em-up fans are also well catered for, as Cave's Progear and Takumi's Mars Matrix were also published by Capcom for the CPS-2 and are therefore fully playable via the CPSEmu emulator.

Better with buttons

Xperia Play owners will find that the CPSEmu emulator is optimised for use on their gaming handset, with full support for the Play's physical controls.

If you don't own a Play, though, fret not. CPSEmu will work with touchscreen controls, so long as your device runs Android 2.2 or later and packs a 1GHz (or faster) processor.

You can download the CPSEmu emulator for free from this XDA developers forums thread, but if you're in a charitable mood, you can pick up the "donation version" from the Android Market for £2.49 / $3.96 [download].

Of course, to play anything at all, you'll need the ROM files for each game. Remember, kids: downloading the ROM for a game you don't actually own is against the law, so you probably shouldn't do it.
