Sometimes games slip past our news netting laid out on the surface of the App Store and make a break for freedom, with our reporting boat struggling to catch up with the title as it dashes along under the surface of the waves.

Companions is one such game.

Released onto the vast iOS ocean just under two weeks ago, this debut iPad-only dungeon crawling game from German outfit Smuttlewerk has fought its way through to the New and Noteworthy section of the App Store and picked up a number of strong customer reviews on the way.

The game is in part a traditional crawler - beat up monsters, take loot, and repeat - but uses the increased screen estate offered by the tablet to introduce a party of characters, races, and classes to choose from.

There are over 100 items and 30 special items to discover in Companions, an absolute boatload of monsters (or ‘mobs’) to take down, and they're all wrapped up in some old skool top-down graphics.

To be honest, though, any game that features ‘a really big dragon’ as one of the features on its description automatically piques our interest.

We’ll be taking a look at the title shortly, but if you’re impatient, you can buy the game for the App Store for £2.99 / $4.99 / €3.99 by clicking on the link below.
