Space Miner Blast, Venan Entertainment’s freemium follow-up to sci-fi favourite Space Miner: Space Ore Bust, is now available to download on iPhone and iPod touch.

The freemium edition does away with the story and adventure, turning the game into an arcade shooter. You blast asteroids and enemies to grab loot, turn loot into dosh, and buy upgrades for your space ship.

But instead of earning cash to save old Uncle Jeb's fledgling ore business, this time it's about getting combos and rocketing up the leaderboards. The game uses Apple’s Game Center to offer up achievements and leaderboards which prove you’re the best space miner around.

If you want a head start, though, you could cough up some real world cash for a premium ship, which come pre-loaded with awesome weapons, shields and collectors. They’ll set you back 59p / 99c / €0.79c each.

The game also features Retina display graphics for supported devices, as long as you spend some cash on a premium ship. Otherwise you’re stuck with the old visuals. And adverts - they’re gone too if you choose to fork over some pennies.

To celebrate the launch, the game’s predecessor, the more story focused Space Ore Bust, is on sale. It’s available on iPhone and iPod touch for £1.19 / $1.99 / €1.59.
