Kotaku reports that Nintendo president Satoru Iwata wanted the 3DS to launch in time for Christmas 2010.

Unfortunately, thanks to slow manufacturing, Nintendo realised it wouldn’t have enough units made for this year, so the gaming giant “delayed” the console's release date till Februrary 2011.

What’s this got to do with the PSP 2? Well Spong thinks that Sony's handheld will be coming out Easter 2011, either leaping ahead of the 3DS or snuggling up right next to it in an almost simultaneous launch.

That’s thanks to claims from an anonymous developer who told the UK gaming website, “I can't tell you,” when quizzed on the new device. “I'll be able to tell you why I can't tell you in six months though.”

Spong thinks that the six month hint points to the magical PSP 2 date. If it's correct, Nintendo’s manufacturing problems have scuppered its chance to get the jump on Sony’s new machine.

Back in May, several sources claimed to have PSP 2 dev kits, and earlier this month Mortal Kombat developer Netherrealm Studios described the PSP 2 in its possession as "a pretty powerful machine."

Even so, scepticism is advisable. With no images or announcements, or even a confirmation from Sony that the PSP 2 exists, the possibility that Nintendo will be sharing the limelight next Easter is remote at best.
