At Nintendo’s E3 booth, the publisher was keen to show off a collection of tech demos and upcoming games running on the glasses free 3DS system.

But between clips of Starfox 64 3D and Pilotwings Resort, Nintendo filled the sizzle clip with images of classic NES and SNES games, including Castlevania and Metroid, all given the 3D treatment. Kotaku’s Stephen Totilo, who saw the images first hand, described the effect as a “pop-up book feel”.

Kotaku then quizzed Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime on the clips. The Nintendo head honcho said that classic games would be heading to the 3DS, but re-imagined with new features, and visuals that will make full use of the 3DS's spiffy visuals.

It’s not quite the handheld virtual console we’ve been pining for, but it’ll do just nicely for now. Plus, at least you’ll have a pretty good reason to buy your 46th copy of Super Mario Bros.
