iPad 2 will have OLED screen?

It’s only been out for three weeks in the US, and isn’t out at all everywhere else, but already rumours have started to emerge of the expected iPad successor.

It appears that the iPad 2 (name subject to wild variation over the next year) will come with an upgraded screen, according to sources from 'in the component industry'.

DigiTimes reports that the next magical tablet device from Apple will sport an OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) panel as opposed to the current LED.

Despite what the name might suggest, OLEDs are not grown in a special, non-pesticide farm, but are in fact a type of display technology that allows for deeper blacks, thinner designs (no backlight required) and a better contrast ratio than their non-organic cousins.

However while it sounds like a sensible upgrade route for the iPad to take, the current price for a 9.7 inch OLED screen are roughly $500, as opposed to $60-70 for standard LEDs.

So unless the price collapses before the predicted 2011 launch date, treat this rumour with a hefty truckload of salt.
