I have to confess I find Nintendo's decision to release the fourth iteration of the DS fairly baffling.

The switch from the original DS to DS Lite made sense for the aesthetics, while the DSi provided the ability to download games and added two cameras.

Getting bigger screens - something that increases the console's overall size significantly - doesn't really seem like a good reason to bring out the DSi XL (or DSi LL as it's known in Japan) however. Presumably there are internal changes beyond the improved battery life that make sense to Nintendo.

Still, it's been officially announced that the larger device will be available in Europe on 5th March should you want to take the opportunity to upscale.

It will come in wine red and dark brown colour schemes, while pre-loaded software includes Dr Kawashima's: Little Bit of Brain Training: Arts Edition and Dictionary 6 in 1 with Camera Function.

Pricing hasn't been announced, but as was the case in Japan, it's likely to cost more than the current £140 charged for a DSi, at least until all DSi stocks are sold out.
