Nokia rolls out Maemo access to Ovi Store

N900 software now available over the air

Nokia rolls out Maemo access to Ovi Store

The Ovi Store has seen its share of teething troubles, but clearly Nokia is committed to making its App Store equivalent the primary repository of its mobile software.

The Finnish manufacturer's new flagship smartphone, the N900, is built around the hot new Maemo 5 operating system, and therefore hasn't been able to get into the Ovi catalogue which has required access through a Symbian app.

The latest N900 software update has just changed all that, however, opening up the Ovi Store doors to Maemo games and applications.

Currently there aren't any paid N900 apps on the Ovi Store (presumably while Nokia tests out the device and its operating system's access) though developers are expected to be able to sell their Maemo software through the portal very shortly.

Maemo is rapidly achieving critical acclaim (even if N900 reviews are mixed) and giving developers a place to distribute software for the new platform should really help ramp up support.

Yes. Spanner's his real name, and he's already heard that joke you just thought of. Although Spanner's not very good, he's quite fast, and that seems to be enough to keep him in a regular supply of free games and away from the depressing world of real work.
