Homebrew hacker extraordinaire ZodTTD has been hard at work squeezing emulators into the iPhone, and is apparently enjoying considerable success.

A new video has been posted showing off a Nintendo 64 emulator, running on iPhone 3GS or iPod touch 3G. The emu has gone on sale on the 'other App Store' for jailbroken handsets, Cydia, and can be seen running some pretty impressive renditions of Mario Kart 64 and Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

The N64iPhone emulator accepts N64 ROMs in a variety of archives, although we don't want to get too involved in discussions about the grey area of game downloads. I'm sure you understand.

But perhaps even more exciting than the emulator itself is the work the developer has been doing with the iPhone's Bluetooth stack. The N64iPhone emu, and others ZodTTD has worked on, are able to use a WiiMote as an external controller, giving the games the physical buttons they need along with an external accelerometer.

In a recent blog post, ZodTTD has also stated that he's working on adapting the Bluetooth system to work with a PS3 controller, bringing a full joypad to the emulators. Damnably exciting stuff that could really revolutionise iPhone gaming (on jailbroken devices, at least).

Naturally, we won't be seeing this on the ordinary App Store, but fans of those Nintendo classics are well advised to keep a close eye on ZodTTD's progress. Here's the N64iPhone video, followed by MAME4iPhone seen working with a WiiMote for controls.

Yes. Spanner's his real name, and he's already heard that joke you just thought of. Although Spanner's not very good, he's quite fast, and that seems to be enough to keep him in a regular supply of free games and away from the depressing world of real work.
