DSi XL goes on sale in Japan

But are the queues XL, or XS?

Apparently, the letters "ll" stand for extra large on Japanese clothing, which accounts for the seemingly obscure name of Nintendo's latest hardware revamp, the DSi LL (to be known as the DSi XL over here).

The DSi LL features a considerably larger form factor than the DS or DSi, with 4.2 inch screens (as opposed to the DSi's 3.25 inches) suggesting it's aimed at more of a web browsing, application-using experience.

It also comes with a pen-sized stylus, further bolstering its serious multi-use profile.

According to Kotaku, the launch day sales in Japan were quite favourable, with shops seeing queues of up to 100 people at opening time. The Japanese are known as early adopters, however, so it's not the usual tech-induced riot we've seen with other hardware.

Priced at ¥20,000 (around £136 or $225), the Japanese DSi LL comes with three DSiWare titles pre-installed: two brain trainers (science and humanities) and the DS Easy Dictionary.

Whether this will be the case when the DSi XL is released worldwide early in 2010, we'll have to wait and see.

Spanner Spencer
Yes. Spanner's his real name, and he's already heard that joke you just thought of. Although Spanner's not very good, he's quite fast, and that seems to be enough to keep him in a regular supply of free games and away from the depressing world of real work.
