At least four major UK retailers have already cut the price of Sony’s new handheld gaming device after just one weekend of sales. In what has to be one of the quickest price reductions of recent times Amazon.co.uk, HMV, Play and GAME have all reduced the price of the PSPgo by £25 to £199.99.

Argos, meanwhile, has offered a slight discount to £219.99 while ShopTo, the major online retailer who described the PSPgo as “dead on arrival”, has yet to follow suit and continues to charge the full £224.99.

To many, the speed of the price cut points to a worrying lack of sales on the retailer’s part. However, Sony continues to play down concerns, with SCEE insisting that sales of the PSPgo have performed in line with expectations while sales of PSP hardware have risen 120 per cent since its introduction to the market.

Sony’s PSPgo Rewards promotion and the new £25 price cut appear to go some way in appeasing consumers. However, despite these incentives it remains to be seen whether it will be enough to tempt UK gamers into a purchase.

Alternatively many may hold on to their money anticipating another reduction as we head towards Christmas.
